What is a service?

As wikipedia would put it,

A motor vehicle service or tune-up is a series of maintenance procedures carried out at a set time interval or after the vehicle has travelled a certain distance.

Service (motor vehicle), wikipedia

The service intervals are set by the car manufacturer and specific to the vehicle. The most common service intervals are every 10,000 to 12,000 miles or yearly. Some more modern vehicles actually show the next service due date on the cars instrument panel.

Though a service can be called a tune-up, it should not be confused with engine tuning. This is where the engine is tuned or modified to improve the vehicle performance; handling or durability instead of maintaining the engine and keeping it running as intended.

Completed services are usually kept and recorded in the vehicles service book upon completion of the service. A complete service history can even raise the value of the vehicle upon resale.

Why Service?

We highly recommend you regularly service your car. Servicing keeps your car running at its best and reduces the risk of it breaking down when you most need it. During a service, we will inspect your car and replace parts that are aged or worn, to keep it running smoothly and reliably. This will save you money in the long run as you face fewer big bills caused by major components, such as the engine or suspension, breaking due to a lack of maintenance.

The type of service you choose is really important because, depending on the service your car last had, it may need a more thorough inspection than usual, or vital parts may need replacing.
